Arab Parliamentary Union backs Lebanon’s sovereignty as ceasefire takes hold
By Dr. Hana Saada
Brahim Boughali, president of the Arab Parliamentary Union, has welcomed the ceasefire in Lebanon as a constructive step towards de-escalation, urging full respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement relayed by the People’s National Assembly, the Union described the truce as a meaningful move towards ending hostilities, restoring stability and addressing Lebanese expectations for security after months of heightened tensions.
The Union reaffirmed its “full support” for Lebanon, stressing the need to halt repeated violations of its territory that erode state authority and destabilise the region. It called for strict adherence to relevant international resolutions, particularly those of the United Nations Security Council mandating a complete and unconditional withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
Reiterating its long-standing commitment to Arab solidarity, the body rejected any infringement on the sovereignty of Arab states, warning that threats to territorial integrity or national security are unacceptable and non-negotiable.
The statement also underscored the centrality of the Palestinian question, urging recognition of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people—foremost the establishment of an independent state along the 4 June 1967 borders, with El Quds as its capital—alongside a halt to settlement activity and withdrawal from occupied territories.
It concluded that durable regional stability hinges on respect for state sovereignty, strengthened Arab coordination and firm resistance to external interference.
