Belgian Customs Seize Tonnes of Cannabis in Shipment Arriving from Morocco
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS – Belgian customs authorities have seized a large shipment of cannabis concealed inside a cargo container arriving from Morocco at the Port of Antwerp, one of Europe’s busiest commercial gateways, according to customs officials.
Authorities said the narcotics were discovered during routine inspection and screening operations, alongside a quantity of calcium sulphate, allowing customs officers to intercept the shipment before it entered the European market.
Belgian customs did not immediately disclose the precise quantity of cannabis seized or provide further details regarding the intended destination of the shipment.
Following the seizure, the competent Belgian authorities opened an investigation to identify all individuals and criminal networks involved in the trafficking operation, trace the shipment’s logistical route and determine any potential international links associated with the case.
The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to dismantle the network behind the attempted smuggling operation.
