Algiers — British Ambassador to Algeria James Downer drew widespread attention on Algerian social media after appearing alongside presenter Hana Ghezzar Bouakkaz in a lighthearted culinary segment on the television programme Algeria Through the Eyes of the World, broadcast by Ennahar TV.
Filmed in Algiers, the segment showed the ambassador tasting karantika — the popular Algerian street-food dish made primarily from chickpea flour and eggs — while reacting spontaneously to its flavour, describing it as “very good,” in scenes that circulated widely online and generated strong public engagement.
Widely regarded as one of Algeria’s most recognisable and accessible street foods, karantika occupies a distinctive place in the country’s urban culinary culture and remains closely associated with popular dining traditions across multiple cities.
