British Ambassador Says He Moves Freely Through Algiers Without Security Escort

British Ambassador to Algeria James Downer said he regularly walks and jogs alone in the streets of Algiers without personal security, in remarks that generated wide online attention following his appearance alongside presenter Hana Ghezzar Bouakkaz on a programme broadcast by Ennahar TV.

“I go out walking alone all the time. I run in the streets of Algiers without any bodyguard,” the ambassador said during the televised interview, describing his daily experience in the Algerian capital.

The comments circulated extensively across Algerian social media platforms, where many users interpreted the remarks as a positive reflection of public safety, urban stability and everyday life in Algiers.

Downer’s intervention came during a broader discussion on his experience living in Algeria since assuming his diplomatic post. The programme explored the country through the perspectives and experiences of foreign diplomats and international figures residing in Algeria.

The ambassador’s statements also prompted wider online discussion regarding perceptions of security and quality of life in major international capitals, with many commentators drawing comparisons between Algiers and several large global cities facing growing security and urban challenges.

Beyond the immediate public reaction, the interview illustrated the increasing role of informal diplomatic engagement and media visibility in shaping international perceptions, particularly when foreign envoys speak directly about their day-to-day experiences within the societies where they serve.
