IMF Ranks Algeria Fourth Among Arab Economies in 2026 by Purchasing Power
By Dr. Hana Saada
The International Monetary Fund has positioned Algeria as the fourth-largest economy in the Arab world for 2026, based on purchasing power parity (PPP), with a gross domestic product estimated at approximately $915.79 billion.
According to the Fund’s assessment, this ranking reflects a convergence of structural and market-driven factors, most notably sustained momentum in global energy prices and robust international demand for natural gas. These dynamics have been complemented by a reinforcement of foreign exchange reserves and the strategic allocation of hydrocarbon revenues toward large-scale investments in mining and manufacturing industries.
The report further underscores the role of public financing in advancing industrial transformation, with a focus on downstream value creation and the gradual diversification of the national economy beyond its traditional dependence on hydrocarbons.
Macroeconomic stability has also emerged as a key supporting pillar. The IMF highlights that relative economic stability, coupled with measurable growth in non-hydrocarbon sectors, has strengthened Algeria’s productive capacity and resilience within a fluctuating global environment.
Looking ahead, the Fund projects Algeria’s economy to expand by 2.9 percent in 2026, signaling continued, albeit moderate, growth anchored in both energy sector performance and incremental diversification efforts.
