ALGIERS – The Port of Mostaganem handled more than 13,000 tonnes of non-hydrocarbon export cargo in a single day on Friday, marking one of its strongest operational performances as Algeria continues efforts to expand exports beyond the energy sector.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the port authority’s General Directorate, the operation involved the simultaneous loading of three commercial vessels from three separate berths within a 24-hour period, reflecting increased operational capacity and logistical efficiency.

The exported cargo comprised 6,900 tonnes of bagged cement, 3,000 tonnes of olive pits and 500 tonnes of reinforcing steel, all destined for international markets as part of Algeria’s strategy to diversify its export base.

The port authority said the operation was made possible through the full mobilisation of its human, technical and logistical resources, supported by close coordination among operational teams and stakeholders to ensure the smooth execution of loading activities and maintain high productivity levels.

The achievement comes as the Port of Mostaganem continues to implement measures aimed at improving operational performance in line with the Ministry of Transport’s strategy to enhance the competitiveness of Algeria’s ports and strengthen support for exporters, particularly companies operating in the non-hydrocarbon sector.

Alongside growing commercial activity, the port is undergoing a broad modernisation programme that includes the rehabilitation of two berths, the construction of a dedicated container logistics platform and the installation of modern passenger screening equipment at the maritime terminal.

Authorities have also launched a feasibility study for the construction of a third harbour basin capable of accommodating larger vessels, a project intended to expand the port’s handling capacity and support future growth in international trade.

Through these infrastructure investments, the Port of Mostaganem aims to strengthen its position as a strategic regional and national logistics hub, facilitating the expansion of Algerian exports and improving the access of domestically manufactured products to global markets.
