Sahrawi Student Voices Gratitude to Algeria During Solidarity Event in Blida
By Dr. Hana Saada
BLIDA – A Sahrawi student expressed gratitude to Algeria and its people during a solidarity event held in the province of Blida in support of the Sahrawi people, describing Algeria’s longstanding backing as a source of enduring support for the Western Sahara cause.
Speaking during the gathering, the student, who identified herself as Nouria from Western Sahara, thanked the Algerian people for what she described as more than five decades of solidarity with the Sahrawi cause.
“We are here today in the province of Blida participating in activities supporting the Sahrawi cause alongside our brothers and sisters from the Algerian people,” she said. “I extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Algerian people, who have remained steadfast in supporting our cause for more than 50 years.”
She added that, for Sahrawis, Western Sahara represents more than a political issue, describing it as “our homeland” and expressing hope that “justice, freedom and peace” would ultimately prevail.
The remarks were delivered during a public solidarity event organised in Blida in support of the Sahrawi people, where participants reiterated calls for a peaceful resolution of the Western Sahara question.
Western Sahara is classified by the United Nations as a Non-Self-Governing Territory and has remained the subject of an unresolved political dispute since Spain ended its colonial administration in 1975. Following Spain’s withdrawal, Morocco assumed control over much of the territory, while the Polisario Front, which the UN General Assembly has recognised as the representative of the Sahrawi people, proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and sought independence through armed struggle.
In its 1975 Advisory Opinion, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concluded that it had not found legal ties of territorial sovereignty between Morocco and Western Sahara that would affect the application of the principle of self-determination. The Court stated that the people of the territory retain the right to determine their political future through the free and genuine expression of their will.
Armed conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front continued until a United Nations-brokered ceasefire entered into force in 1991, accompanied by the establishment of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). The mission was created to monitor the ceasefire and support efforts toward a referendum on self-determination, although such a vote has yet to take place.
The United Nations continues to regard Western Sahara as a Non-Self-Governing Territory and supports a political process aimed at achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution that provides for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.
Several international legal decisions have addressed the territory’s status. UN General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV) of 1960 affirmed the right of colonial peoples to self-determination and independence. In 2016, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Western Sahara has a separate and distinct status from Morocco under international law. Subsequent judicial decisions have similarly emphasised that the territory’s natural resources should be managed in accordance with the interests and consent of the Sahrawi people.
The Western Sahara issue remains on the agenda of the United Nations, with international mediation efforts continuing under UN auspices in pursuit of a negotiated political settlement acceptable to all parties.
