ALGIERS — Female students secured the top three positions in Algeria’s 2026 baccalaureate examinations, extending a pattern seen in recent years as girls continued to outperform boys in the country’s most important secondary school examination.
The results, announced on Sunday by Education Minister Mohamed Seghir Sadaoui, showed an overall national pass rate of 56.18%, compared with 51.57% in 2025.
Guerroumi Bouchra Hibat Allah, a student at Chahid Bouzira Ahmed High School in the wilaya of Tiaret, ranked first nationally with an average score of 19.26/20 in the Technical Mathematics (Civil Engineering) stream.
Second place went to Nasrallah Yakin, originally from Tébessa and enrolled at the Mathematics High School of Kouba in Algiers, who achieved 19.21/20. Saal Zineb Douaa, a student at the private El Massir School in El Achour, Algiers, ranked third with 19.16/20 in the Experimental Sciences stream.
The 2026 results mirror those of the previous session, when female students also occupied the top three national rankings.
According to figures released by the Ministry of Education, girls accounted for around 65% of all successful candidates this year, while boys represented approximately 35%, continuing a long-standing trend in Algeria’s education system.
The ministry reported that 327,029 candidates passed the examination out of approximately 582,000 who sat for the tests, representing an increase of more than 47,000 successful candidates compared with the 2025 session.
Education officials attributed the improvement in national results to the stable academic year, which enabled schools to complete teaching programmes under normal conditions before the examinations.
The baccalaureate remains Algeria’s principal gateway to higher education, with successful candidates eligible to compete for places at universities and other higher education institutions across the country.
