ALGIERS — Police in the northeastern province of Tizi-Ouzou have dismantled a suspected network involved in the trafficking of psychotropic substances, arresting five individuals and seizing more than 1,000 psychotropic capsules during a targeted anti-drug operation, local security authorities said.
According to a statement issued by the Judicial Police services of the Tizi-Ouzou Security Directorate, the operation forms part of an intensified campaign led by the Criminal Investigation and Intervention Brigade (BRI), in coordination with the Anti-Narcotics Brigade, to combat the trafficking and distribution of drugs and psychotropic substances across the province.
The authorities stated that investigators acted on precise operational intelligence, enabling officers from the Criminal Investigation and Intervention Brigade to dismantle a network specializing in the distribution of psychotropic drugs.
The operation resulted in the arrest of five suspects, who have since been referred to the competent judicial authorities on charges related to drug trafficking, according to the police statement.
During the intervention, officers seized 1,072 psychotropic capsules, in addition to a significant amount of cash believed by investigators to have originated from the illicit trafficking activity.
The Tizi-Ouzou Judicial Police said operations targeting drug trafficking networks remain ongoing as part of broader efforts to combat organised crime and the illegal circulation of narcotics and psychotropic substances throughout the province.
