Algeria Strengthens Coordination to Advance Mining and Industrial Transformation Projects

Senior officials from five ministries reviewed the implementation of Algeria’s flagship mining projects—including Gara Djebilet and the Integrated Phosphate Project—while emphasizing accelerated infrastructure development, enhanced intersectoral coordination and adherence to the implementation timetable set by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

ALGIERS, Algeria — Senior officials from five government ministries convened on Tuesday for a high-level coordination meeting to assess progress on Algeria’s major strategic mining projects and the accompanying infrastructure required to support their implementation, as authorities seek to accelerate execution in line with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s industrial development agenda.

Held at the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies under the chairmanship of Secretary-General Medjelled Miloud, the meeting brought together the secretaries-general of the ministries responsible for hydrocarbons, interior and local authorities, transport, mines and mining industries, and water resources.

Discussions focused primarily on the Gara Djebilet iron ore project, the Integrated Phosphate Project, and the strategic infrastructure needed to ensure their efficient development and future operation.

Supporting infrastructure at the center of discussions

Participants reviewed the progress of essential support infrastructure, particularly projects aimed at securing water supplies for industrial facilities and expanding railway and logistics capacities.

According to the Ministry, the objective is to ensure the efficient transportation of mineral resources between extraction sites, processing and transformation facilities, and export terminals, while supporting the gradual expansion of national production capacity.

Implementing presidential directives

The meeting forms part of the implementation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives to accelerate strategic mining projects, strengthen industrial sovereignty and increase the contribution of the mining sector to Algeria’s economic diversification strategy.

Officials also examined measures designed to meet the operational requirements of several flagship industrial facilities, including the primary processing unit at the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine, the iron concentrate production project in Toumiat (Béchar), and phosphate processing and beneficiation complexes in Bled El Hadba (Tébessa) and Oued Kebrit (Souk Ahras).

The participants emphasized the need to continue expanding water supply capacities in line with the phased commissioning of these industrial installations.

Expanding mining transport capacity

The meeting further reviewed the status of mining transport infrastructure, particularly projects aimed at strengthening the loading and transportation capacities for iron ore and phosphate.

Officials noted that these investments are intended to support the gradual commissioning of railway lines, facilitate rising production volumes, and ensure the efficient movement of raw materials and processed products to domestic industrial facilities and export ports, as part of an integrated mining and industrial value chain.

Strengthening interministerial coordination

The secretaries-general stressed that the current stage requires closer operational coordination among all ministries and institutions involved, alongside the prompt resolution of technical and administrative issues that could affect project implementation.

They reaffirmed the importance of adhering to the implementation schedule established for the strategic projects, consistent with the President’s vision of maximizing the value of Algeria’s mineral resources, deepening industrial integration and increasing the mining sector’s role in diversifying the national economy.

Periodic monitoring mechanism established

At the conclusion of the meeting, participants agreed to establish a periodic monitoring mechanism under the supervision of the secretaries-general of the ministries concerned.

The mechanism will regularly assess implementation progress, strengthen coordination among all stakeholders and facilitate timely decisions aimed at accelerating the completion of supporting infrastructure and related facilities.

Authorities said the initiative is intended to ensure that all strategic mining projects enter into operation within the established timetable while reinforcing Algeria’s ambition to emerge as a regional industrial and mining hub and further consolidate its industrial and economic sovereignty.
