Algeria’s Gendarmerie Reports Broad Security Operations and Falling Crime in 2025

Algeria’s Gendarmerie nationale presented its 2025 activity report on Sunday in Algiers, outlining sustained operations across public security, judicial policing, environmental protection and road safety.
The briefing, held at Gendarmerie headquarters, was led by senior officers including Col. Azzedine Djallal (road safety division), Lt. Col. Toualbia Tarek (judicial police division) and Lt. Col. Bouabdellah Yahiaoui (public security and protection division).
On child protection, specialised units carried out 5,220 awareness actions nationwide through 27 dedicated brigades operating in schools and media environments. The interventions led to the reintegration of 997 children into their families, alongside 5,684 judicial investigations involving minors. A further 4,110 inspections were conducted in childcare facilities.
Environmental enforcement included 4,690 patrols, 4,107 awareness operations and 2,215 inspections within inter-sectoral committees. Authorities recorded 8,147 environmental offences and conducted 1,440 technical interventions.
In cultural heritage protection, units operating in Tipasa, Oran, Constantine and Tlemcen carried out 3,151 patrols, 449 awareness actions and 2,164 committee missions. The operations resulted in 231 recorded offences, 28 archaeological discoveries, the seizure of 121 ancient coins, 14 archaeological artefacts and two manuscripts dating back more than 400 years.
On forest fires, 214 outbreaks were recorded across 30 wilayas, leading to investigations and the arrest of 39 individuals, 16 of whom were placed in custody.
The national emergency hotline 1055 logged 3,677,383 calls in 2025, underscoring its continued role in citizen reporting.
Overall criminal activity fell slightly to 959,740 cases, compared with 976,203 in 2024. Crimes against persons declined by 2% to 60,115 cases, with 59,421 individuals implicated. The case resolution rate rose to 87%, up from 82%.
Operations against neighbourhood gangs led to 4,360 arrests, the dismantling of 861 gangs and 1,395 criminal associations.
Crimes against property fell by 14% to 24,988 cases, involving 6,011 individuals. Vehicle theft declined to 1,683 cases, with 31 networks dismantled, while livestock theft reached 1,635 cases and 183 networks were neutralised.
Drug-related crime remained high, with 24,296 cases handled and 19,878 individuals implicated. Seizures included 13.4 million psychotropic tablets, 378.588 kg of cocaine and 21.222 tonnes of processed cannabis. Authorities dismantled 99 drug trafficking networks and 117 psychotropic trafficking networks. Destruction operations covered 25,367 kg of drugs, more than 5.3 million tablets and 33.47 tonnes of cannabis, with estimated value exceeding 5 billion dinars.
Smuggling activity declined, with 129 networks dismantled and 4,749 individuals involved. Illegal migration showed mixed trends, decreasing overland (634 cases) while rising by sea. Cybercrime rose by 7% to 3,064 cases, driven mainly by privacy violations (46%) and online fraud (31%), with minors accounting for 5% of victims.
Road safety operations totalled 1,494,487 interventions, averaging more than 4,100 per day, including 795,349 patrols and 699,138 checkpoints. Prevention efforts included 45,930 awareness campaigns, while enforcement recorded 1,796,351 fines and 145,053 traffic offences.
Despite the scale of operations, road accidents reached 7,735 cases, resulting in 2,996 deaths and 13,504 injuries. Human error accounted for 93% of incidents, with speeding identified as the leading cause.
