Survey Finds Majority of Spaniards View Morocco as a Security “Threat”

By Dr. Hana Saada

More than 60% of Spaniards consider Morocco a “threat” to their country and support a political distancing from Rabat, according to a SocioMétrica survey published in El Español.

The poll indicates that 61.4% of respondents favour a reduction in political ties with Morocco, while 57.6% describe it as a security threat.

The perception appears broadly shared across the political spectrum, with 52% of Socialist Party (PSOE) voters, 97.3% of Popular Party supporters, and 92.2% of Vox voters reportedly endorsing a policy of distancing from Rabat.

The findings come amid ongoing Spanish security concerns linked to trafficking networks operating across the southern frontier. Morocco is frequently described in Spanish security discourse as a key source of hashish entering the European market.

Spanish authorities have repeatedly reported large-scale drug seizures and dismantled trafficking networks operating between Morocco and southern Spain, particularly in Andalusia and the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

On 31 March 2026, Spanish police uncovered a cross-border underground tunnel in Ceuta equipped with rail infrastructure and small wagons allegedly used to transport cannabis resin between Morocco and Spain, according to the Spanish Interior Ministry.

Authorities continue to report regular interceptions of fast boats used for drug trafficking, alongside recurring seizures of large quantities of hashish and the dismantling of organised criminal networks linked to cross-Strait smuggling operations.
